It’s all in your head!

So I’ve been doing okay! But generally everything has been going on a downwards trend. I’ve decided I’m going to fix myself! I am not giving up until I get myself out of this wheelchair!

But in the meantime…

So every day I come up with a new theory:

I just figured out that a lot of our well being is just in our heads…

I was walking/scooting around for days when my mother and husband pointed out a big bruise on my thigh. It wasn’t hurting when I didn’t know about it, but all of sudden after being aware of the bruise, it started throbbing. Ridiculous πŸ˜›

It’s crazzi how much power our minds have!  I also noticed I’d be better after seeing friends. I was stronger and able to take better steps. I was asking my neurologist this. Is it serotonin? What is helping me walk better?? My neurologist says serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs) have shown to help fatigue significantly in MS patients. I started taking fluoxetine 20 mg (Prozac).

And I love it! I call it my happy pill! πŸ˜€

It gives me energy physically and makes me strong and happy to fight this disease head on!

So take away points:

-Being sad or tired isn’t your fault! People take meds to fix their diabetes so I see no shame in taking meds to fix your brain

-Ask your doctor about fluoxetine, it helps significantly with fatigue (and it helps me walk). I hate taking meds but I feel this is necessary!

-I will keep you updated if I figure out anything new! πŸ˜€

  1. Dr Veena — thanks for the information! I had a very busy weekend away and was feelind down about how exhausted I was when I returned. I appreciate all your knowledge. Best!

    1. Dr. Veena,

Applaud your courage and thanks ever so much for the candid updates on your treatment.

Would it be right to say that currently you are off DMTs and are able to walk with some assistance?

Adding you to my prayer list.

      Best,
      Samy

  2. I am so glad to hear that you are doing well! Keep on fighting you will overcome.

I always enjoy reading your posts.

  4. Veena, the challenge is Real but your attitude will contribute to your well-being!
Keep on doing what you do with that beautiful smile on your face!

    1. Aww you’re too nice! I mean , I do have my bad days but no point in sulking πŸ˜‹

  5. Veena, i learned years ago by Dr. Aaron Boster, that Prozac causes brain fog in people with MS. He presented at the first Health and Wellness Forum for MS in 2019. I had been on Flueoxetine at that point, therefore d/c’d its use at that point. This was presented at the forum in Southfield, where I sat with you and your husband. Do you remember seeing me there? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you 😊

    1. That’s a good point! But I guess it’s about weighing the benefits and risks! Fluoxetine significantly helped my fatigue… haven’t noticed any brain fog yet πŸ˜‹

  6. Dr. Veena,
I am very happy to note that you are feeling better with this new medicine prescribed by your Neurologist. Taking any medication is not bad if they correct our ailments, BP, Diabetes, cholesterol. More precisely taking any medicines allopathy, homeopathy and naturopathy to make you feel happy, painlessly is best option.
We wish you all happiness and satisfaction while fighting your MS as Multiple Sclerosis Defeater. In your bad times, you are lucky to have lovely and caring husband, father, mother and in-laws and above all your daughter.
    GOD BLESS YOU

  8. Dear Veena, it is so good to hear from you and to hear how you have taken control of your diagnosis. I am so proud of you – you need to write a book so others can learn from you.
